Developing a framework for data-driven disease mapping for Africa

Coordinators: Ola Uthman, Warwick University, Tim Kamanu, University of Nairobi, Victor Odumuyiwa, University of Lagos, Andrew Katumba, Makerere University

This research program will introduce a comprehensive framework for disease mapping in Africa, utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the understanding and management of diseases across three critical domains: human health, agriculture, and animal health, through discovery science. This multidisciplinary initiative will be built upon three foundational pillars:

1. Disease Focus: The program will encompass a broad spectrum of diseases, spanning human health, agricultural impact, and animal health. This inclusive approach will allow for a holistic understanding of disease ecosystems and cross-species transmission dynamics, crucial for comprehensive disease management and prevention strategies.

2. Methodological Approach: At the heart of this initiative will lie a synergy of AI, computational thinking, and mathematical modelling. AI and machine learning algorithms will process complex, multi-layered data sets, while computational thinking will guide the structuring and analysis of this information. Mathematical modelling will provide predictive insights and simulate disease spread scenarios, contributing to more effective planning and response strategies.

3. Factors in Disease Mapping: The program will consider a diverse array of factors in its disease mapping efforts. This will include traditional risk factors such as environmental and socio-economic conditions, contextual elements like spatial and geographical data, and cutting-edge genomic information. Such a multifaceted approach will ensure a nuanced understanding of disease dynamics and contribute to more targeted and effective intervention measures.

The ultimate objective of this program will be to leverage AI and data science in creating a dynamic, multi-dimensional disease mapping tool. This tool will serve as a vital resource for policymakers and health practitioners, aiding in the formulation of targeted health interventions and policies. By bridging the gap between advanced technology and practical health solutions, the program aims to foster a more resilient and healthy Africa.
