Kujenga Programme – Building Skills for Real-World Impact

“Kujenga,” meaning “to build” in Swahili, is a six-week program that equips participants with skills in mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence to understand and solve real-world challenges. The course begins with foundational concepts and progresses to applied model building using statistical methods and modern tools.

Launched in February 2026 through CoRE AI at Uppsala University, with support from the IT Equal Opportunities Group, the program was implemented across seven partner universities in Africa. It attracted over 1,200 applications within two weeks, with 30 students selected per university, forming a diverse and interdisciplinary cohort with a strong representation of women.

Kujenga emphasizes practical, hands-on learning through weekly sessions, mentorship, and a final project where students develop solutions to challenges in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and education. Delivered through a dedicated online platform and supported by local instructors and international mentors, the program enables students to apply AI and data-driven thinking within their own communities. Following the success of its 2026 launch, the Kujenga program is set to continue and expand, building on its strong foundation to reach more students and institutions. It aims to grow a sustainable network of skilled, collaborative, and impact-driven young researchers in artificial intelligence across Africa and beyond.
